FAQs

Plains Physical Therapy

  • What should I bring to my first appointment?

For your initial visit, please bring your insurance card(s) and a photo ID. If your insurance requires it, bring a physician referral or prescription. Additionally, bring a list of your current medications and any relevant imaging or test results, such as X-rays or MRIs. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement, such as shorts, a t-shirt, or workout attire.
  • How early should I arrive?

We recommend arriving 15-20 minutes before your scheduled appointment time if you need to complete paperwork. This extra time allows us to review your insurance benefits. If you've already filled out the necessary forms in advance, arriving 5 minutes early is sufficient.
  • What happens during the first visit?

Your initial visit will involve a discussion of your medical history, current symptoms, and treatment goals with your physical therapist. We'll conduct a comprehensive evaluation, which may include assessments of your strength, mobility, balance, posture, and movement. Together, we'll develop a personalized treatment plan. If time permits, you may receive your first treatment session and a home exercise program to begin your recovery process.
  • How long will it take?

Your first appointment typically lasts between 45 and 60 minutes. Subsequent visits are usually shorter, ranging from 30 to 45 minutes, depending on your specific treatment plan.
  • Do I need a referral to start physical therapy?

In Montana, as in most states, you can see a physical therapist without a referral, which is known as 'direct access'. However, some insurance providers may require a referral for coverage. Our team will assist you in verifying your benefits before beginning treatment.
  • Will insurance cover physical therapy?

Physical therapy is typically covered by most insurance plans, but coverage details can vary. We'll verify important information such as copays, coinsurance, or deductible amounts, annual visit limits, and any authorization requirements. For those without insurance or who prefer to pay directly, we offer self-pay options.
  • What should I wear?

We recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the area we'll be treating. For lower body issues, shorts are ideal. For upper body or neck concerns, a tank top or loose shirt is appropriate. Supportive shoes or sneakers are advised. If you're being treated for vertigo or dizziness, we suggest arranging for someone to drive you home after your appointment.
  • How many visits will I need?

The number of visits required varies based on your specific condition, treatment goals, and progress. Some patients experience improvement after just a few sessions, while others benefit from a more extended care plan. Your therapist will discuss expected treatment duration during your initial visit.
  • What if I need to cancel?

We kindly request at least 24 hours' notice for appointment cancellations. This allows us to offer the time slot to another patient who may need care.
  • What makes physical therapy different from other care?

Physical therapy focuses on addressing the underlying cause of pain or limitation, not just treating symptoms. Our approach combines hands-on treatment, targeted exercises, patient education, and lifestyle strategies. This comprehensive method aims to improve mobility, accelerate healing, and prevent future injuries.
