Complete Decongestive Therapy – Lymphedema is a disease resulting in abnormal swelling in one or more limbs of the body. In the United States, 90 percent of all lymphedema is caused by trauma to the lymphatics. This most often occurs with surgery, especially Cancer surgery where removal of lymph nodes is routinely performed to determine if cancer has started to spread to other regions of the body. This results in a barrier for preventing fluid removal. Other frequent causes are severe tissue trauma, chronic venous insufficiency, lipedema and post-thrombotic edema associated with a blood clot. Currently there is no cure for lymphedema.
The focus of Complete Decongestive Therapy is to decrease swelling and reduce the size of the involved limb(s).
